Statement of Beliefs

The mission of Evanswood Church of God is to help people become followers of Jesus Christ, to disciple and to equip believers for ministry and to worship and glorify God.

We Believe In.....

We believe in God, the creator of all things. He is Ruler of the Universe, and God exists eternally in three persons: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Within the Godhead these three persons, the Holy Trinity, are co-equal and one. They are identical in character and attributes.

We believe in Mankind. The origin of man is attributed to God and God alone. Man is made in the spiritual image of God, and mankind is the supreme object of God's creation and love. Mankind has a tremendous ability and potential to do good, but he is marred by an attitude of disobedience called sin. All men and women have sinned. We are responsible for our actions and choices, but, through Jesus Christ, mankind can be restored to God.

We believe in Eternity. Man was created to exist forever. Man will either exist eternally united with God or eternally separated from God. Through salvation in Jesus Christ and forgiveness of sin, a person can be and will be united with God in eternity (heaven). This is eternal life, to be eternally separted from God is to choose eternity in Hell.

We believe in Jesus Christ and that He is the Son of God. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin Mary. Jesus is co-equal with God the Father. He lived a sinless human life and coffered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. Jesus rose from the dead after three days and ultimately ascended into Heaven. He did this to demonstrate His power over sin, over death, and over Satan. Just as Jesus ascended into glory, He will return again to earth as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

We believe in Salvation. Jesus Christ came to save those who would believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior. Salvation is a gift from God to man. Sin separates man from God, and in order to enter a right relationship with God, sin must be confessed, repent of, and forgiven. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's sacrifice for sin can man be forgiven and saved from sin's penalty. Salvation is given immediately to anyone who would ask God with a sincere heart. Eternal life then begins at the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his or her life by faith.

We believe in Grace. Grace is a gift of mercy and unconditional love given by God, although we are undeserving and unworthy of such a gift. Grace can simply be defined as God's great redemption at Christ's expense. We cannot be saved through good works. We can only discover and maintain salvation through the grace and power of God. Yet, for those who are saved by God's grace, a desire to demonstrate Christ's salvation will evidence itself in actions of faith and love.

We believe in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is co-equal with God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son. The Holy Spirit is present in the world to make men and women aware of their need for Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is also present in and dwells in the heart of those who believe in Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to live holy lives, gives understanding of spiritual truth, and provides guidance for everyday living. Through the Holy Spirit, those who believe in Jesus Christ are sanctified or "set apart" for God. Sanctification is accomplished through the work of the Holy Spirit, enabling the believer to live a holy and pure life, committed to God and His work.

We believe in Spiritual Gifts. Once a person becomes a Christian, he or she is given, by the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts. These gifts are given for the purpose of building up the body of Christ, the church, and to bring glory to God. Spiritual gifts are to be discovered and used by all Christians in love and with an emphasis placed on the unity of believers.

We believe in the Bible as God's Word to all men. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is inspired and inherent concerning the basic meaning of God's messsage. The Bible is the source of truth. It is living and active, inspired by God and able to lead people into a right relationship with God. The Bible is man's blueprint for living.

We believe in Baptism. Baptism by the Holy Spirit takes place in the life of all Believers when they accept Christ and are born again. We believe that water baptism by immersion is the biblical testimony of all professed Belierers in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
